Daughter of the Moon Goddess

Daughter of the Moon Goddess by: Sue Lynn Tan: Xingyin was born on the moon, hidden from the Celestial Emperor because her mother stole the elixir of immortality. But when Xingyin’s magic flares and she is discovered she’s forced to leave home. Alone in the Celestial Kingdom, she disguises herself, training next to the Emperor’s son. Now, in order to rescue her mother, she must embark on a dangerous quest against creatures and enemies forcing her to make hard choices in the things she wants. This was a coming of age, fantasy that totally mesmerized the reader; this was such a beautiful story with so much heart and well written characters. The plot was good, but it didn’t move the reader as much as the characters did. There were a lot of elements to this story as it took place over the course of many years and it was such a joy to watch the main character, Xingyin grow and become the person she was supposed to be. All the journeys she went on were thrilling to read because it was never predictable what the outcome was going to be. The Chinese mythology in this was so action-packed and riveting which left for a refreshing read. The writing was also immaculate, it really moved the reader in how beautiful it was; it really brought everything together. The way she wrote of love and loss was so spot on and perfectly worded, the reader couldn’t help but find the beauty in it all. The characters were so strong, bold and memorable; the on-going relationship between the Xingyin and the Prince was so heartbreaking to read at times. Just when the reader thought they knew how things would end, it changed and was constantly changing, harrowing yet also charming at the same time. This novel was full of many emotions that the reader isn’t sure they are quite ready for the conclusion to this duology, but if the writing is anything like this one, it is sure to be another highly recommended novel.
