Review: The Maze Runner Trilogy

Hello, today I have decided to post my review on the Maze Runner trilogy by James Dashner. Seeing as the second movie, The Scorched Trials comes out next Friday, I thought it was only appropriate.

*Sidebar: I will have the film reviews for the first two films up hopefully a week after the movie comes out*

The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner by: James Dashner: The first novel in the Maze Runner trilogy, and we, the reader, are thrown into an unknown place, with no recollection of anything. All the main character remembers is his name. The only thing he really knows is that he wants to become a runner, and run in the maze. It’s an interesting storyline because you the reader feel like the main character; really confused about everything, but that makes the story just that much better. The author likes to write cliffhangers and you end up with really short chapters, but a very captivating story. Overall, it was gripping from the moment the reader started to read, all the way until the very last word. Now the author makes you wait for the second novel to find anything else out. Hopefully the second novel is just as good!

The Scorched Trials

The Scorched Trials by: James Dashner: The second novel in the Maze Runner trilogy. This time the boys from the Glade are brought through new obstacles in a desert. They are teamed up with a group called Group B who are just like the boys, only they are girls. They come together to fight off Cranks and other vicious things that get in their way. They are told it’s the end, but is it really? The reader will have to find out by reading the next novel. This novel started off really slow, and it dragged on about being confused in a new place, which is boring, and a little redundant to read. It finally picked up in the middle, and almost became a horror novel. After that you just couldn’t put the book down! Overall the author should lessen his beginnings & lengthen out his endings!

The Death Cure

The Death Cure by: James Dashner: The final novel in the Maze Runner trilogy. It’s all about trying to figure out who has the best chance to find a cure. WICKED seem to be evil, but as the story goes on, the team against WICKED, The Right Arm, isn’t any better. It’s up to Thomas to figure things out. The novel was well written, with a lot of plot twists near the end, the reader kept thinking they were safe, and bam something else happens. That kept readers on their toes to keep reading. The only thing about this novel is the fact that everything happened at the end, and even that didn’t describe, or help fulfill readers expectations of what this novel would hold. It was a great series that was original, and fresh, but the ending just kinda fell flat. Overall, the first two novels were really great, but this one just didn’t hold up, which is very disappointing.

The Kill Order

The Kill Order by: James Dashner: The prequel to the Maze Runner. 13 years before the maze, Mark and his friend Trinia were exposed to the sun flares. Afterwards they meet more people and joined a group, and throughout the novel, one by one they start to go crazy. They’re trying to figure out why, as well as trying to get one little girl safe. This novel was well written and kept the reader interested by having characters who were interesting to read, or the reader related to them on some level. Out of all the novels in this series, this one was by far the best. It had everything the reader was looking for in the trilogy, and more. Overall, for a story that’s about the future and over population, it’s a great story.
