Movie Review: Shrek Series

Hi everyone! Happy Tuesday! I’m throwing my schedule all the way off as I have some movie reviews lined up and I don’t have a set day to post them so I’m going to be sporadically posting them! Today I’m going to be reviewing all four Shrek movies!

Shrek: Shrek is a mean, green ogre who just wants to be left alone, but people keep invading his swamp. When he runs into Donkey they create a plan to get his swamp back, only it involves going on a quest to rescue a princess; Princess Fiona. This film, as vulgar as it could be at times, was a well put together movie. The story arch was engaging and quite engrossing, although some of the dancing and singing numbers just felt a little out of place. What this film did really well was the characters and all of their relationships. All of the characters have no problems saying things like it is, and that’s what makes these friendships worth watching. The dynamics that each character go through are so well done; each character cares for the other, even if they don’t want to. Plus, the music that was used just enhanced the scenes. Overall, this was a strong, well put together film.

Shrek 2: Shrek and Fiona are happily married, so now it’s time to meet the parents. They make the trip to Far, Far Away to meet Fiona’s parents, only things don’t go over so well. Her father clearly disapproves of Shrek, so Shrek goes out of his way to go on a quest to prove to her father he is worthy. This film, much like the first was filled with extremely hilarious dialogue and witty scenes. The plot was good and had some depth to it; there were layers and kept the viewer entertained, and it was actually kind of sweet for an ogre movie. Some of the same tactics that were in the first movie were in this one, which made it feel a little repetitive, but it did work for this movie. The characters were well developed, and the addition to new characters was really well done and they fit right in with the rest of the cast making this film an enjoyable watch.

Shrek the Third: In the third installment Shrek finds out that he’s next in line to throne, and this terrifies him. It terrifies him so much that he enlists Donkey and Puss in Boots on a quest to find the next heir to the throne, a kid named Arthur. But what terrifies him even more than that is the fact that he’s going to be a father. This movie was filled with hilarious dialogue and funny scenes. The plot, like the past few movies, had a good arc, and the plot stayed consistently good beginning middle and end. As much as this movie was about the main characters, it was good to see a lot of the secondary characters get more screen time. This was a fun filled movie that was very enjoyable to watch.

Shrek Forever After: Tired of his consistent life, Shrek gets very angry at a birthday party that he tells Fiona that he wished he’d never saved her. Well doesn’t he get his wish thanks to Rumpelstiltskin; stuck in this alternative universe with everyone he knows, who don’t know him. It is true loves kiss that will set him free. This film, like all past Shrek films before it was very sentimental and adorable. The plot was sweet, an a little unoriginal, but even though it wasn’t the most ground-breaking story, it was still really well done. This film wasn’t really needed, but it was nice to see an ending for these characters. The characters got to break out of the mold they were set in for the past three movies, and got a change, which was very entertaining to watch. The music throughout the film was used a lot, and it felt like the film really relied on the music, and at times felt very random and overused. Aside from this, it was a wonderful film.
