Let’s Talk About… Awkward Season 5

Hi everyone! Welcome back to TV Tuesday! Today I’m going to be talking all about the final season of Awkward.

From left to right: Greer Grammer as Lissa Miller, Brett Davern as Jake Rosati, Nikki DeLoach as Lacey Hamilton, Desi Lydic as Valerie Marks, Beau Mirchoff as Matty McKibben, Molly Tarlov as Sadie Saxton, Jillian Rose Reed as Tamara Kaplan and Ashley Rickards as Jenna Hamilton

It’s still senior year and so they have to do their senior prank. Their first prank is to streak through the halls, but Jenna ruins that when she overhears that Jake and Gabby hooked up. Now she doesn’t know what to do, tell Matty or not to. So ops to not tell him, and it works… for a bit. They try the prank again, lying on the floor, and that doesn’t work and so they try once more, by putting underwear up the flag pole.

Then the two cool guys, end up making their prank the best; they fill the halls with foam and have strobe lights. It’s all fun and games until Jake tells Gabby Matty was going to break up with her. That’s when Gabby confronts Matty, Jake confesses and Matty punches Jake, here we are with this hot mess again.

Now that the night is over, they have to clean up. While cleaning a mop fight breaks out and that’s when Jenna throws a bucket of water at light switches and that shuts the school down, and everyone goes to the beach to have a party. Now everyone is in love with Jenna, and she’s popular.

At that party there is still drama between Matty, Jake and Gabby. That’s when Matty looses it, now he’s no longer popular and no one wants to hangout with him… everyone but weird ass Kyle. He’s starting to become a geek.

Sadie’s mother is back and she can’t stand it. She wants Sadie back in her life by buying her things. It takes some time and some talking to, and Sadie starts to let her in. And this makes Ally jealous. Who would have thought sex crazed, booze drinking woman is going to miss Sadie.

What?!? How does Adam love Tamara after only a few months?! He actually proposes to her with his grandmothers ring. She says yes but she keeps telling Jenna she’s going to break it off, but every time she goes to, she can’t face telling him. I have no idea where this is going to go.

Uhhhh I hate that Lissa always refers to her mom as “mommy” and dad “daddy”. Ugh.

So it’s the mother daughter banquet where all the moms act like their daughter. Sadie goes with her mom and Ally helps Sadie’s mom to make it the perfect impression. Sadie’s mom takes all the credit for Ally’s hard work, yikes.

Jenna’s mom almost bombs her performance but Jenna comes through and helps make it the perfect  performance.

They also get their yearbooks and Jenna is voted most depressed. She lets Matty sign her yearbook while she signs his, she writes this long meaningful message and all she gets is you’re a cool chick. I don’t know why she expected more, haven’t we gotten over all this, clearly not.

So Tamara still hasn’t told Adam she doesn’t love him… and she’s still on the marriage bandwagon and she has a engagement party. It’s all high class and Jenna can’t stand the big secret and she almost makes it through the night, until she spills the whole thing to Brian. Tamara gets mad, and Adam storms out, obviously. But it wasn’t until she didn’t have Adam anymore she realizes she’s in love with him.

Gabby is at the party super drunk and tells Jenna that Matty may or may not have feelings for her. Uhvfhhabzibwnxojw WHY ARE WE STILL ON THIS?!?!?!?!?!? So she has this huge Sex and the City dream which makes her realize she’s still in love with Matty and so she wants to tell him. She asks him out and now Matty’s starting to think she wants to get back together. He’s even thinking about going to school close to her instead of Berkeley his dream school.

It isn’t until they go on their date that Jenna realizes she couldn’t say she loved him, and she lets him go.

So Tamara goes after Adam and finds a drunk Gabby in the back of her car, but it’s Gabby who helps her out to get Adam to come down. In the end it doesn’t work and it’s a little heartbreaking. In the end he does, and it’s still heartbreaking.

So Jenna’s mom wants a gender reveal party for the new baby. Val makes her return to talk about all her travels. Everyone already knows it’s a girl, but it’s Val who is surprised about the announcement. They are actually pretty good friends.

So Val has been interesting the last couple seasons. She met a guy on the ski trip, Biggie. They have been on and off for the past year, but he’s taught her a lot, and opened her eyes. He is allergic to her cats and she hates that. She ends up leaving for a bit, but when she comes back she realizes she’s ready to marry him.

It’s prom again, and everyone is hating on it. Jenna is hating on it because of Matty, of course. She comes up with this whole no ask campaign where if no one asked you to prom you don’t have to go to prom. But now she’s been nominated for prom queen so she has to go to prom.

Oh. No. What is Jenna gonna do. We’re led to believe that she’s going to ask Matty, instead she goes to ask Tamara. It’s Sadie who goes to Matty’s door, and he asks her to prom.

Yikes, Sadie is going through something and now she’s taking it out on Sergio, he wants to make this decision with her, but she won’t hear him. So he makes the decision anyways. He now has his own food truck, so when he shows up with it, Sadie has no idea why he has that, then gets mad at him for not asking him. When she goes to make it up to him, because let’s be honest, she doesn’t apologize ever. He is completely done with her, and breaks up with her.

So she goes to Matty.

Prom is among us, and everyone is making a big deal out of it, and I don’t know why. Jenna’s hair and makeup are totally botched, she gets red wine on her white dress and ends up going in a wedding dress, which is so overly puffy. Tamara tries to make it better by cutting it into this glamorous dress, but that fails, then to top it off she falls and her dress catches fire. She calls it a night… or does she.

Tamara on the other hand also has a crappy night, but then Adam shows and up and makes everything perfect, he proposes to go out with her and the two have a pretty magical night.

Lissa is dressed as Cinderella and Theo her date, which he’s there as her date to totally make Cole jealous, is Prince Charming. She’s mad because it’s not going the way she planned, and everyone keeps leaving prom.

That’s because Cole has a party room upstairs and that’s where the real party is.

The there’s Sadie, oh Sadie. So she finds out her mother was lying to her the whole time. The only reason she came back was the show her new boyfriend that she’s close with her daughter because this new guy is a real family man. And all Sadie’s mom wants to do is marry this guy. Poor Sadie.

So she and Matty hit the prom for two seconds before realizing that the Barbie theme is too much for them and they go drinking instead. Matty is silent most of the night and Sadie takes this as a sign that he’s in love with Jenna. So they go back to the prom so he can tell her.

Jenna ends up back at the prom so that she can try and enjoy the rest of the night. They announce prom queen and king and when Matty finds out it’s not Jenna he doesn’t want to win so he lets Kyle win.

He still gets to dance with her and he tells her he loves her, and then it looks like Jenna isn’t going to do anything, she inner monologues that it could be too late, yeah right because you don’t spend every waking moment worrying about him, and she says it back. What a sweet moment.

Then Sadie notices that everyone left their booze bottles so she’s cleaning them and gets caught, and also gets caught with Matty’s flask.

Val tells her she can’t walk at graduation. Sadie thinks she’s joking and shows up at the grad breakfast, only to loose it when she finds out Val wasn’t joking. Matty feels terrible so Jenna tries to talk to Val and gets Matty kicked out of graduation.

So what does Jenna do, she rallies the entire class to get Matty and Sadie to walk, well they get Matty to walk, but not Sadie so Matty still doesn’t want to walk without her.

So Jenna goes to Sadie’s house to drag her to graduation. And it looks like it doesn’t work, but then she asks Theo and Cole to borrow their drone and Sadie makes her speech. It’s actually a really motivating speech about how life isn’t fair and that they should do their own thing. It’s pretty moving.

Then right as graduation ends, Val ends up getting married on stage. How incredibly weird.

Then Matty tells her she’s leaving the day after graduation for soccer camp. So Jenna thinks they need to do everything in one night. But all that leads to them to rushing through the night and having to figure out what they’re going to do. In the end Jenna breaks up with Matty.

Jake and Tamara are starting to hoard things from high school and is not until Cole and Theo make a comment about how Jake peaked in high school that they throw it all away.

And Sergio shows up and Lissa manages to get him and Sadie back together.

Jenna can’t end it that way and so she goes to Matty to get back together and they end up going to Berkeley together.

So the last part of the season is a year after first year of college and things have changed, drastically.

So Jenna and Matty broke up, and for some reason we’re playing the guessing game to figure out what happened. Like why do we need to do this? Now they can’t even talk to each other, it’s a little sad.

We eventually find out what happened between them but that’s not until we see her at her new internship at this online blog/magazine ideabin, and we run into Luke. So it turns out that Luke was the one to help her get the position, but she ends up really clicking with him and they sleep together and she tells him her whole Matty story.

So it turns out Matty came to visit her during Halloween and he can’t stand her new friends because he thinks their boring. So they fight. The next day Matty is all apologies and wants to do everything Jenna said he should, and that’s when he springs it on her that he wants to move and go to school with her to be with her. He quit the soccer team and hates Berkeley, so he wants a new start, and Jenna thinks he’s doing it for her and not himself, which she doesn’t want. So this leads them to officially break up.

Now the rest of our characters, well Tamara is in New York and doesn’t know anyone, until she runs into Sadie. From there they bond because Sadie needs a familiar face, now the two are bffs, it’s interesting. I kinda like it. It’s funny the friends you hate in high school become your best friends. Now Tamara is torn between being friends with Sadie and friends with Jenna as the two still hate each other.

Sadie is trying to get back with Sergio but he’s moved on, and Sadie is not happy.

Lissa hated school so much she dropped out to be a house mom. So now she works for Jenna’s mom looking after her sister, Morgan. She is also now dating Jake, and Jake is on the road to who knows what.

He’s working at a country club for all the rich. He started as a towel boy, now he’s worked his way up to manager. He’s all serious and Matty is completely not.

Matty’s new girlfriend is a complete ass. She likes to pull pranks on everyone and just be rude.

It’s Sadie’s birthday party and Jenna invites herself even though no one really wants her there. Like even Tamara doesn’t want her there. But she does have Luke with her. It’s that night that they finally get together and call each other a bf/gf.

Matty and his girlfriend end up ruining part of the night. As she gets this big guy to punch out Matty as a prank then breaks the champagne bottle. They obviously get kicked out.

Then Tamara can’t afford the bottle service. I want to know where this plot will go. I hope they follow through with it.

After the party, Luke tells Jenna he doesn’t want to date in public because they work together. So now she’s having deja vu.

In order to try and reconnect with Tamara and so she gets Tamara a job at her work as a advertiser intern. When she starts, everyone loves Tamara and they want her to write a piece, something Jenna has been working for but hasn’t gotten anywhere with. Now she and Tamara are fighting, but they come together and write a collaborative piece and it gets published with both their names.

Jenna’s mom has to take summer school, and so does Matty. They sit next to each other and become partners in their German class.

NOOOOO. Matty is thinking about talking and reconciling with Jenna, ugh. And he calls her. NOOOOO. Oh good, I’m glad that he said it was just a butt call. Although they do almost become friends again, but that is ruined by Jenna. And I’m not really sad about it.

Well it’s July 4th and everyone wants to party, so they choose the country club, without telling Jake. It’s a great party, even loner Kyle who always wore black shows up and he’s not wearing black and actually looks good. That’s when Tamara wants to hook up with him because she thinks he’s hot, and he’s the only one single.

Well they make a mess of the place and Jake could get fired if they’re found, and it’s Luke that was left behind that gets Jake fired.

So what do they do, they throw a party for Jake to say they’re sorry they got him fired. He’s actually happy about it, even though he’s been Mr. Serious as the manager. It’s Ally who gets him his job back. She likes the way he makes her drinks and him only, and she has pull because her husband owns the club. So he’s now employed again, but Lissa isn’t happy about that. She doesn’t want to date the manager of a country club, she wants her man to be a member of one. Go figure.

Also that night, Jenna’s first article goes viral, and of course it’s about her break up with Matty, and of course he’s not happy about it.

So she spends the next day trying to get the post down. She also finds out that they took out a lot of her words to make Matty “mark” look like a complete jerk. I feel him because we learn that he was really broken up about the break up. It took his new girlfriend forever to get him to bounce back, and that’s when Jenna finds out that she’s not a complete horrible person. I still don’t like her.

So Jenna stands up to her boss to get the post taken down, everyone tells her not to, but her boss ends up being nice to her and taking it down and not firing her.

So what does Jenna do, she goes to Matty’s house to apologize yet again and read part of her real article and leaving him. I really, really, really just want to move on from these two. Like gah she’s alllllllways taking about Matty and it makes me want to tear my hair out

Sadie and Sergio are having some issues, well they’re always having issues, but she’s jealous about his new girlfriend. Well they end up breaking up, so Sadie goes for it and they start hooking up. She wants to be his girlfriend and Sergio isn’t up for that, he’s in love with her and he wants her full time not just during the summer. So I’m hoping that they start together.

Ugh I can’t stand this guy, Ethan. He’s supposed to be gay, but you can tell the actor isn’t gay in real life and he’s taking all the stereotypical gay aspects and blowing them out of proportion. It’s horrible.

So Jenna’s parents go away for the weekend, but they can’t find a sitter, Jenna offers to do it but they don’t trust her. She begs for the chance to prove them wrong. Weeeelllll she can’t seem to get her sister to stop crying. That’s when Matty comes over because he thinks he has a study date with her mom. He starts to help her out and try start to fight and so she is left on her own to stop the baby from crying.

She starts to tell Morgan the story of how she messed up with Matty and he happens to hear it all over the monitor. He ends up staying all night to help.

Tamara is dating Patrick a rich upper east sider. She is now faking her life and claiming she’s just like him. So when he asks her to meet his friends, who are girls, she freaks. She asks Sadie to come along with her and well I’m not sure what kinda of impression she made because the girls where complete airheads.

Then we have Lissa who has seen the light. She doesn’t want to be the rich mom, who’s husband is a country club member. Her mom is getting married to this guy who makes paper toilet seat covers and she doesn’t even love him, just wants him for the money. That’s when Lissa decided to get back with Jake and possibly have a future.

Lissa is about to get angry at this girl, but instead of getting into a fight, she finds the way of feminism. It’s really good to see her care about things, but her tone of voice makes it like she’s mocking it. I can’t stand it.

Tamara runs into Adam of all people at a wedding party, the irony is real.  She has been hired as a bridesmaid to get out of debt.

Sadie is a complete biiiiiitch. She bitches at Tamara because Tamara wants to borrow some money since she’s in debt from Sadie’s party. Sadie doesn’t want to lend her money so Tamara fights back and Sadie doesn’t like that. Then she goes to yell at Lissa and with Lissa’s new feminism ways she fights back for the first time. Than lastly she bitches at Sergio while he’s trying to talk to investors to broaden his food truck. When she shows up trying to hang out they leave. Ugh.

So Matty ends up breaking up with his girlfriend after a night of drinking and missing his German final.

Jenna writes yet another great front page article, only its about Luke and how she found him. Luke is pissssssed. He’s worried for his job and they get into a huge fight. It turns out that he didn’t want to say he was dating anyone because he wanted their boss to know that he’s still available for when promotions and things happen.

W-O-W

Well Jenna is so mad that she goes home. While at home she finds a letter saying camp pouka is closing and that there is one last day. This is where Jenna and Matty meet, so who do you think she runs into when she’s there, Matty of course.

They spend the day together taking and being friends. In the end Luke texts Matty to find out where Jenna is, what a friendly thing to do.

Turns out that Luke has some good news for Jenna the dean of English to the school of her dreams, SCU, thinks she has this amazing voice as a writer and wants to meet her and interview her. This means that Luke and Jenna can fully be together at the same school.

And that’s what people think, she’s moving because of Luke. Her mother and Matty are questioning her decision, but this is really about her and it’s good to see. Not everything is about a boy. So she’s officially transferring to SCU.

So now Sadie is abusing Matty. And he gets sick of it too. He tells her that maybe it’s not the people around her but herself. She gets so mad while driving a food truck that she hits another truck. We’re led to believe that she is dead, but of course she isn’t. She’s still just as bitchy. That’s when they think she may have tried to kill herself, oh man.

So Jake is helping Lissa make her Christian work out videos, which are doing really, really well, and that’s when he gets in trouble… or so he thinks. Instead he gets a promotion. He finds out his manager has been with the club for 20 years and that scares Jake. I think Jake should go to school for visual design or something because he’s good at putting videos together.

The series ends with the official closing of camp Pookah. Everyone is going and Jenna so desperately wants to go but there is this SCU “party” that Luke tells her she should go to instead. It would make her look good since she’s kinda already behind, and get to meet the teachers.

So she goes and finds it completely boring. Luke tells her to act more alive and so better, then tells her maybe she should just go to camp. Another mini fight.

So she goes and she has a great time.

Tamara finally admits to her boyfriend Patrick that she’s not rich, and that she’s 12,000 dollars in debt, he goes 12k is nothing to sweat over, yeah okay rich guy. He wants to pay it off for her, but she doesn’t feel right doing that, so instead she does the hard thing and breaks up with him.

Jake quit his job at the club to go to New York and Tamara tells him she can show him all around. Kinda cute.

Sadie, well she has a turning around moment. She needs to see a councilor for her attempt at suicide and so guess who, Val is back. She takes Sadie to the camp and Sadie looses it, and breaks down when she sees her horse, and that’s when she somewhat apologizes for how bad her behaviour has been.

Lissa has gotten this big corporate deal for her videos, but decides that she isn’t going to do that, instead she’s going to work hard so she won’t need a middle man. Go Lissa.

Then the show ends on Matty and Jenna, because of course. That’s when he tells her he loves her, and that he wants her to choose him over Luke. But he also tells her that’s what he wants for himself, but what he wants for her is to choose herself over everyone and do what she wants. He’s realized that she has found what she’s good at and what she likes to do and he doesn’t want to stand in her way. He tells her that he will always be there for her.

I kinda like how it ended on a sweet note. It could have been a lot worse.

This show had it’s highs and its lows, but every step of the way it was hella entertaining.
