When – The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing

When by: Daniel H. Pink: In this book, Pink takes a look at the art of timing and how looking at the ‘when’ of a situation can benefit our lives. For example, when to change jobs, when to schedule classes, finding out when you’re most productive, it’s all based around the science and studies found in the timing of when. This had a lot of interesting concepts and dove into the psychology and biology of people as well as the neuroscience and economics as well. The reader found this easy to read and for the most part enjoyable and informative. The concepts that Pink tried to embark on his readers were concepts that weren’t completely new to this reader. That’s not to say this wasn’t a compelling read, because it was, the reader just felt like they didn’t get as much out of this as they could. For a short book, it packed a lot in; the chapters were short with breakdowns within the chapters for an even and manageable flow of information, which the reader appreciated. On first impressions based on the title alone, this sounded like it would have been more to do with time management, and this book touches on that, and maybe helping with procrastination, but this ended up being more on when to do major life decisions, which is important, but not what this reader thought this book would be. The research was well done and the way Pink explained the things he found in his studies in a more conversational style made this easy to follow along with because some of the concepts could be a little daunting to understand. In the end though, as much as this was fascinating facts, figures and statistics, it wasn’t what the reader completely cared about. This wasn’t a bad book, just not this reader’s cup of tea.
