Hello friends, happy Wednesday! I hope you’re all having a good week so far! Today I’m going to be posting my review of Natalie Zina Walschots novel Hench.

I read this for my Canada Reads project (reading all the nominated books for #CanadaReads).

Hench by: Natalie Zina Walschots: Anna does boring administrative work for criminals. When she’s offered a more promising role, she gets badly injured by the so-called heroes in the situation. Now out of a job and immobile, she does some digging to find out that people suffer from the hands of a hero more times than is let on. Using the power of spreadsheets and social media, she beings to expose the heroes for the damage they have caused people. This was such a fresh perspective for a superhero novel; basing the premise around the villains was such a thrill to read because the reader finds themselves siding with villains and seeing true colours of heroes. This novel was fast-paced and the way that it was told through not only narrative, but emails and text messages, really sped this up and really helped bring the story together. It brought emotions of love and betrayal to the story that narrative couldn’t capture alone. The plot was very action-packed; there were moments in the middle that the plot kinda fell off, but the moment the reader started this book, they were blown away by how good the writing and how different this story was. The characters were angry, but they were also fun to read about and follow along with. They were deeply developed and the connections they shared with one another were complicated but they were also complex and layered, which made everything the main character do a little more interesting. The main character, Anna, was such a force to be reckoned with, she was a badass and got things done, no matter the cost, which could be annoying at times, which her best friend June could attest to, but was really cool to read as the reader. All in all, this was such a high speed read with a really bold and captivating idea for a novel; highly recommend.
