Hi friends, happy Wednesday! I hope you’re all doing well. Today I’m posting my review of Erin Kelly’s novel He Said/She Said.

He Said/She Said by: Erin Kelly: In 1999, Kit and his girlfriend Laura set out to watch a solar eclipse. What starts as one of the best days of their lives quickly turns into the worst night as Laura witnesses a rape and from there she becomes a witness to Beth at her trial. But what ensues over the course of fifteen years is the truth about what really happened that night. This novel was a twisty psychological thriller that had the reader completely turned around by the end. What started out as a typical mystery thriller, slowly unwound to become a mental mind game. By the end the reader had no idea what they had read. The plot was very heavy as at its surface level this was about a rape trial, but there are so many more layers to this and Kelly did a good job of keeping her audience completely unaware of what was to come next. Told in a back and forth from past to present and from both of the main character’s points of view was a really good writing tactic because Kelly was able to hide and show the things she wanted to from her reader and how to make one thing sound like another, it was really clever writing. The way she was also able to interweave the eclipse plotline as well was like a little icing on the cake and made the novel a complete package. As for the characters, they were some of the most deeply developed characters; not only were they extremely flawed, but they also felt real with all the layers they were given. We learn about all of their struggles and how those lead and became a part of the bigger picture. Characters who were thought to be morally good turn to morally grey as the story continued and what we learn by the end is that everyone has a secret to hide. This novel was a true case of the back and forth of how we perceive things and it was done really, really well.
