Review: My Heart and Other Black Holes

Hi! And welcome to another review, today I’ll be reviewing My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Wanga!

I should have guessed by the title of the novel that it would be rather sad. It’s a novel based upon suicide. At first I thought ‘oh no, another novel about suicide’ I’ve read a few of those this year, and the beginning of this novel didn’t really peak my interest. I almost didn’t want to continue reading it. But I finish every book I start and so I knew that I had to keep going. I’m glad I did, because the author really took the time with the exposition. Her writing was gentle and calm, and a little stormy when it had to be. She didn’t rush the plot, it moved at a reasonable pace. It was a really great and informative read that I think anyone can enjoy.

My Heart and Other Black Holes

My Heart and Other Black Holes by: Jasmine Wanga: Aysel is a nerdy sixteen-year-old who is in love with physics. After her father commits a horrible crime, she thinks she’ll become just like him. Meeting Roman, a.k.a FrozenRobot on a website called Suicide Partners sparks something in her. Roman is also a sixteen-year-old who is looking for a partner to commit suicide with after the death of his sister. Aysel accepts this partnership until she gets to know him better. As the novel progresses the two continue to fall for each other, and the more they find out about each other, makes Aysel want to continue to live. The plot promotes the fact that everyone needs someone, and that you need to keep your loved ones close. As much as the plot is serious, the characters were super rounded and crafted so well that they brought the story to life. It’s a great novel to promote a serious topic, it was well written, the attention to small details, and the exposition all worked together to create a gripping novel that the reader doesn’t want to put down until it’s over. Overall, this novel is an outstanding piece of fiction dealing with something as serious as suicide, and making it readable.
