The Beautiful Ones

The Beautiful Ones by: Silvia Moreno-Garcia: The Grand Season is just beginning for the Beautiful Ones, a notable socialite group in Loisail. Nina has been given the opportunity to join the ranks thanks to her well-connected cousin, but it has not started well. Trying to hide her telekinesis powers, she meets entertainer, Hector Auvray, who specialises in the same powers. With his help, she is able to hone her skills, but the more her talents bloom, her love for him does too. Hector hasn’t been truthful with her and himself and so what could have been a fairy tale romance starts to turn into a nightmare. Moreno-Garcia did it again; she wrote such a compelling story the drew the reader in from page one. This story felt like it had been told before, but the twists that Moreno-Garcia added here and there really made it her own. The romance and the drama that played out was so entertaining and the reader flip-flopped between rooting for different characters throughout because these characters were never black or white but completely grey in all their feelings and rationalities. The depths of them were so well done and all their quarks, likes and dislike felt so deeply rooted that they felt like very real people. The development that our main character goes through was so wonderful to watch, she became stronger and an overall better person. Meanwhile, another character’s development undeveloped as she swung so hard into becoming a horrendous person. The only thing that lacked for this reader was the fact that two of our main characters had these telekinesis powers and we wished we could have explored that more; we also wish we could have explored the Beautiful Ones more too. We’re told they are a high society elitist group, but it was left at that. It would have been really fulfilling to have gotten more background to just round out this world with a few more details. Aside from that, this novel was scandalous in all the right ways, it was entertaining, the reader never knew what was going to happen. The way Moreno-Garcia wrote about love was also really beautiful because it felt true to real life, all the good, the bad, the unspoken truths and the way things naturally progress. Overall, this was a delight to read filled with gorgeous writing, and characters you love to hate, highly recommend.
