People We Meet on Vacation

People We Meet on Vacation by: Emily Henry: It’s been two years since Poppy has spoken to her best friend Alex. After a vacation gone wrong, the two have gone their separate ways, that is, until Poppy accidentally texts him… and he texts back; so begins their new friendship. Determined to make things like it was, Poppy has invited Alex on a vacation for old times’ sake in order to restore what was lost. Either it will be the vacation from hell… or their best one yet. This novel was a mix of light, fluffy and dark, heartbreaking and Henry did such a good job of balancing the two. There was never a moment where the reader didn’t want to stop reading; this was just so addicting that we needed to know how it was going to end. The reader liked how this was told in a back and forth between past and present, with this lingering question of ‘what happened’ for the two main characters to stop talking. It took over halfway to figure out, and sure at times that felt torturous but it didn’t affect the overall story or how the reader felt about it. That was also a factor that kept the reader going. It was really well done that the past slowly crept up to the present so that by the time we do get to the end we had the full picture. The friendship was golden and the reader couldn’t get enough of it. What was also so good were the characters. First off, the reader really liked how self-aware they were to not only their own feelings, but to the feelings of others around them but most importantly to each other. It truly showed how much respect they had for the other and how deep their friendship and love for each other went. The two main characters couldn’t be more opposite from one another but that felt like that was the fun of it all; they clashed so hard that it worked. Watching them care for each other was so swoon-worthy; it was pretty obvious how it would play out, but the reader liked the mini fake outs, just to keep us on our toes. Overall, this was such a joy to read; from the fun vacation plots to all the romance; to the will they won’t they dance and beautiful friendships, this was well written and highly captivating.

  2. Ahh I read this book last year – I think it has another title called You and Me on Vacation! It was so enjoyable, and I completely agree with what you said about balancing the different themes! I also really loved the addition of timelines 😆
