Review: Black-Eyed Susans

Hello friends! Happy Monday! Today I’m going to be reviewing Julia Hearberlin’s novel Black-Eyed Susans.

Black-Eyed Susans by: Julia Hearberlin: Tessa was found half alive buried in a field with no recollection as to how she got there. Turns out she was the only survivors of the ‘Black-Eyed Susan’ murders, and now two decades later she realizes that she may have sent the wrong man to prison for the crime as clues start to appear to tell her he’s alive and well. Now Tessa must finally once and for all solve the mystery as to what happened all those years ago. This was a well told story; the way the reader gets to meet and understand the main character is done very well. Not only do we get to meet her in the present but in the past too. This gives us a very rounded and dynamic view of her character. The flipping between the years got to be a bit much as every chapter went back and forth, but it did help move the story along. The cover of the novel states that this is a suspense novel and as the reader got deeper and deeper in, the more suspenseful it got. As characters come out of the shadows and the chapters got shorter, the reader couldn’t help but flip through the pages by the end.

  1. I recently reviewed this audiobook, and I have to be honest, this may be one of the better thrillers I have read. I really loved how Tessa drove the story, but how she always didn’t suddenly become an ameatur P.I. and start investigating stuff on her own. The way it structured the therapy sessions, the countdown, and blending in the courtroom transcripts also felt fresh to me.
