Hi guys! Today I’m going to be reviewing Judy Blume’s lastest novel, In the Unlikely Event. This novel was suggest as a reading club book, (I’m not part of a reading club, I find I read way to fast to be a part of them, or I get distracted and stray from the books) but sometimes I often check out what book clubs are reading, and this novel happened to be one of them. Great novel, I’m glad I picked this one up!

Now I grew up reading her kid books, the Fudge series in particular. (I’m actually thinking of going back and re-reading those novels) So I thought I check out her latest adult novel. Boy I was no disappointed. At first I wasn’t sure what the point of the novel was, it started slow, and then it flashed back, and a million characters it felt like kept having points of views, but beyond all of that, the novel was so good, so well crafted that I didn’t want to put it down.

Beware: the novel may make you never want to fly again, but I’m still saying it’s super good. I found out after reading the Author’s Note that this was based off a true story, and Blume actually witnessed (and with the help of newspapers from that time) went through something like this. I was blown away that this could actually happen. Read and be blown away!

In the Unlikely Event by: Judy Blume: The story of young Miri Ammerman growing up in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The year was 1951 when the first plane crashed; then in the span of 58 days two more crashed in Elizabeth for a total of three. Telling the tale of the destruction and despair that happened in this poor town, this novel looks at the lives affected, and that life is filled with a lot of unlikely events. Miri is going back to her hometown to commemorate the tragedy, and what unfolds is the retelling of the year’s horrific event. The novel is bold, and brilliantly written. Based off of real events, the reader can really feel for the characters, and their each individual stories. How the crashes affected each of their lives in different ways. Not only that, but the novel also touched on first loves, and what it means to be in love. Filled with cute romances, and a few heartbreaks, and heartaches, Blume manages to pull it all together to create a masterpiece. Overall, it was well put together, and really well thought out, the plot never once wavered, and never once made the reader not want to read. If anything it made the reader sad, but you kept reading because you knew it would get better for these characters who are all so diverse and lovely to read about. Check this novel out because it’s just that good!
