Review: The City We Became

Hello friends, happy Wednesday! I hope you’re all having a good week so far! Today I’m going to be posting my review of N.K. Jemisim’s novel The City We Became.

The City We Became

The City We Became by: N.K. Jemisin: All the cities of the world have a soul and New York has six. A big battle is about to ensue, a battle that could destroy the city. Now all six cities must come together to save New York, but first, they have to find each other before they can begin to start saving anything. This novel was like nothing the reader has ever read before. This was so original in story and plot that it took some time to really get into it, but once in and invested it was hard to put down. This was more a story about the characters than it was about the plot. The plot felt like background compared to how much we learned about these characters, what they’ve been through and what they’re currently going through. Personifying cities, mainly the boroughs of New York, was such a creative and innovative way to talk about the people who live there and to talk about their city’s origins. It almost felt like we got some history on these cities and learning about them in such a cool, non-traditional way. Jemisin’s writing was really imaginative and really brought us into the story. The reader really liked the matter of fact way Jemisin stated things and didn’t shy away from anything; all topics were on the table. The overall story arc was fascinating and really action packed. The characters were really compelling and there was a lot of representation through all of them from race, to gender and queer identities, this felt very inclusive. Overall, this was a wild ride of a novel that the reader won’t soon forget.

    1. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the Fifth Season. If it’s anything like this, it’ll be really, really good! 😄
