I just want to preface this by saying this is the sequel to Saints and Misfits that I haven’t read yet… but will be! I accidentally read book 2 before book 1.

Misfit in Love

Misfit in Love by: S.K. Ali: It’s the weekend of Janna’s brother, Muhammad’s wedding and she couldn’t be more excited. She gets to be reunited with her mom after serval weeks apart and everyone she loves is going to be showing up, including her crush Nuah. Janna is looking forward to her weekend of love, until things start to get strange; everyone is acting unusual in different ways. Nuah is standoffish, her dad is giving her looks, and even her mom is acting peculiar. Janna has a lot to unpack and figure out before her brother’s wedding. This was a really well written, thought out and important novel. There were so many different layers to this that stood out to the reader. On the surface level this was a cute, fun read with secret crushes and proclamations of true love; dig a little deeper and you have the strong family bonds and ties that keep us tethered; but when you dig even further you get to the really important question and discussions that our main character, Janna was afraid to have, which is completely normal, but in the end does start to have with her family, and you can truly see how strong those family bonds are. This held a lot of important questions and the starting discussions of race and racism and it was done in a really good and open way. It’s not easy to have these conversations and the reader thinks that Janna’s dad probably took it really well. This was a best case situation because not every hard talk will go as well as this novel portrayed, but it was still really well done in how candid and open the communication was. The rest of this novel was just as captivating and full of life. The plot was fun, there were lighter moments balanced with the heavier ones and that’s what made it manageable to read and fall in love with the characters. Janna was such a bold, caring character who never backed down from her beliefs and said things like they were and the reader really respected her. The secondary characters were also really developed, which made us feel like we knew them and were a part of this wedding. The additional love interests that showed up really left things interesting. The reader liked that they were all so different in personality and in their likes and hobbies, it truly made for an inclusive and diverse reading experience. This novel packed a punch and it won’t be something this reader forgets for a while.
