The Collapsing Empire

The Collapsing Empire by: John Scalzi: The Flow is an extradimensional field which connects planets. But the Flow doesn’t always move in the same direction, and it’s beginning to change course, faster than was ever predicted. Now, a scientist, a starship captain and the emperox of the Interdependency must come together in a race against time to fix what is left before all planets become separated from one another. This was such a fast-paced and fascinating read. The reader was super invested in the world building; there were times when this read like an episode of Star Trek, which was a lot of fun. There was so much going on at any given time that there was never a dull moment. The reader really enjoyed getting to know this world and the intricacies within it. Scalzi did a great job of giving so much detail to really help visualize everything. Also, the slow build-up to what is to come was well done and left the reader invested to know more and see where this is going to go. They can’t wait for the world to open up even more. The characters were definitely unique and Scalzi did a good job of giving each of them a distinct voice, making them very memorable. The only thing the reader didn’t quite care for was the added scenes where it talked about the female characters going to the bathroom or being on their period, because it had no bearing to the story; it didn’t add anything and just felt very out of place. Otherwise, they were strong characters who stood their ground and took nothing from no one; it was thrilling to read. The next book sounds to be even more intense and the reader can’t wait.
