Review: The Lady Helen Trilogy

Happy Wednesday friends! Today I’m going to be reviewing Alison Goodman’s Lady Helen trilogy.

The Dark Days Club

The Dark Days Club by: Alison Goodman: It’s London, 1812 and Lady Helen is just about to have her debut when one of the maids goes missing and things take a turn. Meeting a man, Lord Carlston, who has built his reputation on lies and scandal, to help search, the two head down a path that leads to conspiracies and a group called the Dark Days Club. The plot was interesting; the introduction into this world was good and left readers intrigued to find out more. This novel was just the beginning and it only just touched the surface of all the potential this series can have. The reader can’t wait to see what’s in store. There could have been a little more for the reader to understand the intricacies of this world, hopefully the next book will dive deeper. The fact that Goodman had an underlying romance plot in which the main character wanted no part in felt good to read. For a world that takes place hundreds of years ago, it’s good to see rebellion and defiance where women don’t want to marry. The characters were all set up nicely and they had this way about them that you loved to hate them. For the first novel, this was set up quite well.

The Dark Days Pact

The Dark Days Pact by: Alison Goodman: Helen has left home in the hopes to learn more about the new club she has joined, The Dark Days Club. In doing so she must disguise herself as a man to find out the absolute most she can about this dark society. Aside from that she must also find out what is happening to her partner, Lord Carlston, all while gaining a special journal before it gets into the wrong hands. The world building is getting better; the reader is getting a better sense of the world and how everything works. The plot was pretty fast paced for the most part; there were a few scenes that felt a little dragged out, but this novel had a good solid plot. Goodman’s characters are slowly developing; for some characters not too much has changed from this to the previous book, but for others, major events that happened will definitely change characters for the next book. The ending truly left readers excited for what’s to come next.

The Dark Days Deceit

The Dark Days Deceit by: Alison Goodman: Lady Helen and her partner Lord Carlston are still on the trail trying to defeat their nemesis, the Grand Deceiver. At the same time Helen is in preparation to wed the Duke of Selburn. As events unfold, everything Helen thought she knew start to tumble and crumble around her. What an ending to an already well-crafted trilogy. Goodman really fools her readers, and she fooled them well. Like Lady Helen, the reader had no idea what was going to transpire, so to say shocking, feels like an understatement. The plot highs and lows were so off the charts that this was definitely an epic conclusion. This novel was written so well; that’s one thing that’s so marvelous about this trilogy is the writing. Goodman really knows how to build a world and tell a story. Her characters were so strong willed and feisty that it made the plot come together so well. This was truly a fun, yet heart wrenching ending to a beautiful trilogy.
