Heart of the Sun Warrior

Heart of the Sun Warrior by: Sue Lynn Tan: Xingyin has been living a peaceful life in her home now that she has freed her mother from the Celestial Emperor, but that peace is interrupted when there is a discovery of strange magic on the moon which is giving unsettling changes to the Celestial Kingdom. Not wanting to get involved, but Xingyin finds herself forced to leave her home once more to overcome past enemies to forge new paths, while also learning new truths that could either make or break her. This was such a beautiful story; it wasn’t always a happy story, but the heart was there and the reader really appreciated that. The Chinese folklore was so interesting and riveting to read; especially because it’s something this reader isn’t familiar with. The plot always kept us guessing, we never knew where things were going to go. Chapters would end on cliff hangers, which made this a really fast read because the reader had to keep reading to find out more. There was a lot going on in this too, so there was never a dull moment, everything was go, go, go, and it was all really well done. There was something about this story that was so touching and moving. The author had such a way with words in the way she was able to articulate emotions so explicitly and be in tune with her characters so well. That’s what made this so captivating was the way this was written; the plots and the characters were also great, but the writing was amazing. There were moments that gripped the reader with such grief, but then there were others that greeted them like a warm hug. The balance was exceptional and much needed in a story that had so much going on. The characters all went on huge journeys, not only for each other, but personally, too. It wasn’t always a joy to watch them as they struggled through different things, but seeing them come out the other side was very rewarding to read. Again, the author did such an amazing job of creating these characters and giving them such dynamic stories and backgrounds in which they grew upon and developed. This duology has been perfection. This has become a story the reader can see rereading over and over again for years to come.
