Hi friends, happy Wednesday! I hope you are all well. The time has come for me to list out my top books from last year; I’m excited so let’s jump right into it!

Last year I read 118 books (yay!) of those, only 12 books hit the 5 star read! That’s not too bad, and I feel like I really enjoyed my reading this last year. Of my top reads, 2 of them were re-reads (and on my list last year 😂) and I feel like a lot of them belonged to a series.

I’m going in order of when I read them, so starting with January going into December.

girasol by: Gretchen Gomez. This was a beautifully told poetry collection that dealt with love, loss and grief in such a tangible way. It was heart wrenching, but also felt really liberating. I loved reading this. Read my review.

Ducks by: Kate Beaton. This was the winner for Canada Reads in 2023 and I can totally see why, it was so captivating and well told for a hard-hitting story. It was also a graphic novel that made it so fast-paced. Read my review.

To Kill a Mocking Bird by: Harper Lee. I read this for the first time last year and it was for my classic project and wow, I was not prepared for how much I was going to love this story. The way it was told in the point of view of the kids and how they saw everything unfolding through their eyes, it was so genius! Read my thoughts.

Hana Khan Carries On by: Uzma Jalaluddin. This was nominated for Canada Reads 2023 and it was such a complex, yet fun read. It had an enemies to lovers plot; it had hard hitting topics; it had familial stories; it had finding yourself moments; it felt like it had it all. Read my review.

Anne of Green Gables by: L.M. Montgomery. This was a re-read for me. I finally got around to reading the rest of the series this past year, what a journey that was! This still hit the same way that it did the first time I read it. I can see this book being a reread in future years to come, how can you not love Anne? Read my review.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by: Oscar Wilde. I read this every year, this is the other re-read on this list, and I will continue to read this every year because I love that I find something new to see or appreciate when I re-read it. Plus, the fact that I’m a little older each time also puts an interesting perspective to my takeaway. Read my review.

Anne of Avonlea by: L.M. Montgomery. The second book in Anne’s journey and I loved it just as much as the first, ok maybe not as much and in a different way, but this was still such a sweet novel that I couldn’t stop reading. Read my review.

Anne of the Island by: L.M. Montgomery. I have to be honest, I forgot that I rated this book 5 stars. After the first two in this series, I started to like them less and less, unfortunately. This was the last book before that where we got to see Anne as an adult and making her own choices, living her life and I really did love it. Read my review.

We Spread by: Iain Reid. Another Canada Reads 2023 book on this list, I’m telling you, I really liked these books this past year. This one was so mind-bending and had me on my toes the entire time. I had no idea what it was about, and when I found out, I was shocked. Read my review.

Christine by: Stephen King. My favourite King read of the year; I loved the set up, the slow build up and getting to know the characters; it was such a fun reading experience. Read my thoughts.

You Should See Me In A Crown by: Leah Johnson. This was such a cute fun read mixed with heavier undertones that really came together in a beautiful way. I had such a good time reading this that I had to rate it 5 stars. Read my review.

Heart of the Sun Warrior by: Sue Lynn Tan. I really enjoyed the first book in this duology, and this one was just as good. I floated between 4 and 5 star rating, but in the end I rated it 5 because I loved the plot and the emotions and the writing, such a winning combination. When a book really makes you feel, you gotta rate it 5 stars. Read my review.

And that’s a wrap on my top books for 2023! Have you read any of these books? What were your thoughts? Happy reading in 2024!

    1. The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my all-time favourites, too! Glad you found to Kill a Mockingbird this past year, I know I’m glad I did, what a powerful book!
