Review: On The Come Up

Hello friends! Happy Wednesday! Today I’m going to be posting my review of Angie Thomas’s novel On The Come Up.

On The Come Up

On the Come Up by: Angie Thomas: All Bri dreams about is making it big as a rapper, and with a father who was a legend before he died, she has big shoes to fill. When a song she creates goes viral, things take turns she never saw coming. Between social media buzz, and the financial situation at home, Bri knows that she must make it with all she has. This novel was just as honest and hard hitting as Thomas’s first novel. This plot really let the reader feel what and how Bri felt. It took the reader on a journey of a young girl with big dreams and what she was going to do about it. It also took the reader through the reality of life for some people and opened their eyes to issues that may not always be addressed or talked about in the media. Thomas does an amazing job of creating this story that leaves the reader on the edge of their seat and turning the page. This novel was fast-paced, filled with teen angst that really propels this story forward. But her story wouldn’t be anything without its characters. Her characters are so strong willed and full of passion for what they believe is right, especially our main character, she is a force to be reckoned with and gives a voice to people who feel like they don’t have one. All of the characters were poignant, yet they all left the reader with a sense of hope. This novel was soft as it was hard, and left the reader feeling sad, yet angry, but in the end hopeful and Thomas writes it all so well.
