Review: We Are Okay

Hello friends, happy Wednesday! I hope you’re all having a great week so far! Today I’m going to be posting my review of Nina LaCour’s novel We Are Okay.

We Are Okay

We Are Okay by: Nina LaCour: When Marin’s Gramps passes she learns things that he’s hid from her over the years. Unable to completely come to terms with it all she takes off to New York for school two weeks early. Come four months later, her best friend, Mabel, travels from San Francisco to visit her and tries to get her to come home; this is when all the truths come out. This novel dealt deeply with grieving and the struggles one goes through when losing a loved one. The rich layers this novel explored on grief was so well executed. It also explored young love and the power of friendship. We are dropped right into the story and over time we begin to learn the story and the characters. The reader liked the way this story was told, in a back and forth from past to present until the past crashed into the present. It really gave the story room to breathe without telling and giving too much away. LaCour ended some of her chapters with cliff hangers which helped the pacing; it sped it up when it needed to be. The characters were fully rounded and truly flawed, each in their own way. Watching as the plot unfolded and how that played a role in the character’s emotions was moving. Even though we only spend a little bit of time with these characters, as this is a short novel, yet just the right length, we get so much from them. They give the reader so much that they felt very relatable and real, honest and raw. The whole overall mood of this novel was dark and heavily emotional; there was this intensity that weighted the novel and LaCour captured the feelings really well. It was done in such a way that the ending also felt well-crafted and well worth it. This was such a good novel, with powerful plots and touching characters.
