Review: We Used to Be Friends

Hello friends! Happy Thursday! I hope you’re all healthy and safe! Today was day 4 of working at home and woooof today was a day. Let’s just say rants ensued because getting people to wrap their heads around not working with paper and with PDFs has been strenuous, who would have thought? I had to do some re-work, which I was not happy about, but it’s done now and I can move forward. That being said, today was a day, but tomorrow is Friday!

Today I’m going to be posting my review of Amy Spalding’s novel We Used to Be Friends.

We Used to Be Friends

We Used to be Friends by: Amy Spalding: Best friends, Kat and James have grown up together, know each other’s habits and secrets. Now that senior has come, the two find themselves slowly growing apart in different ways as different things happen to either girl. This novel was so relatable, yet so heartbreaking. The writing was so well done; Spalding captured the essence of what it feels like when the person you know so well, slowly starts to become a stranger. The story was so well told and it was so fast-paced. The only thing that left the reader slightly confused was the timeline that the author decided to write each girl in. James’ point of view was told from the end of their senior going backwards, while Kat’s was told from the beginning of their senior year going forward. The clash of directions confused the reader a bit as to what time they were in. That aside, this novel really made the reader feel, and watching the characters grow and develop into the people they become was fun and sad all at the same time. Spalding did a great job of creating two characters who are the complete opposite of each other. Overall, this was a really good read that didn’t pull any punches and was truly honest and raw.

Oh yes, I wish I had known because I was mega confused! As I was reading the book, I read a few reviews that had mentioned it and I was like OHHH this makes sense now haha!

  1. I love books about friendships, so I’m excited to read this one too. I heard it before that the timeline is somewhat confusing or difficult, so that is holding me back a little. Great review!! 🙂

  2. Ah I’m so, so happy you overall liked that one, despite the confusing timeline! It made me feel a little confused at first, too, but I loved the book despite it all. Such a great read about friendships and how they grow, too. We need more books like this one 🙂

It was so good to just watch their friendship grow and for lack of better words fall apart, because sometimes life is just like that. You grow as a person, and other person just doesn’t grow with you. And that’s totally okay, but it was great to see it in a book. It just felt so relatable to my life right now because I feel like that’s where I’m at.

      1. Exactly! Life happens just like that sometimes and too little stories are exploring these kind of moments. I’m so glad this book exists. I could relate to it a whole lot, too (unfortunately)!
