The New York Times “By The Books” Tag

Hi friends! Today I’m going to be doing the New York Times book tag. I was tagged by Bet @Reading Every Night; thank you so much, and let’s get started! ๐Ÿ˜€

What book is on your nightstand now?

I’m writing this Saturday, so hopefully when I post this I will be finished Wizard and Glass by Stephen King, but that’s currently there.

*ed: I did finishย Wizard and Glass and have moved on toย Dream Warriorย by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

What was the last truly great book youโ€™ve read?

The first thing that comes to mind is Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal.

If you could meet any writer โ€“ dead or alive โ€“ who would it be? And what would you want to know?

It would definitely be Oscar Wilde. I would just want to know about his life, but I want him to tell me of it and not by reading it. He lived such an interesting life. It would be great to talk of his experiences.

What books might we be surprised to find on your shelf?

I’m not really sure since I read from all genres. It’s possible the book on leadership is quite out of place on my shelves. Also I don’t know how much of a leader I really am ๐Ÿ˜

How do you organize your personal library?

How about I don’t? I’ve tried many times to make it by size, by series, by genre and every time I just don’t care for the look of it, so now I just put things where there’s space.

What book have you always meant to read and havenโ€™t gotten around to yet?

All of them? But in all seriousness, probably The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon. I bought it in April and I have yet to start reading it!

Disappointing, overrated, just not good: what book did you feel you are supposed to like but didnโ€™t?

The Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo was something that just disappointed me. The last book just did nothing for me. I know so many people love those books, but they weren’t my favourite.

What kind of stories are you drawn to? Any you stay clear of?

I like stories with good arcs, I like stories with great characters and character development, and the relationship between the characters. I stay clear of anything that is too much on the romance side, since I really don’t care to read that.

If you could require the president to read one book, what would it be?

I’m assuming we’re talking about the president of the U.S.A. here since it’s the NYT book tag. Granted he’s probably never cracked open a book in his life. He needs a ‘learn to be a human for dummies’ book or something.

What do you plan to read next?

The next few books I plan to read consist of the rest of the Dark Tower books by Stephen King; I have 3 left!

  1. Ahhh love these questions! :p Very awesome tag. I like what you said about organizing your book shelf…When I got a new one, I was so excited and had it all planned out but now it’s getting to full annd books are basically just being shoved in haphazardly…organization takes too much work

  2. Heeeeyyyyy ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve never come across this tag! I love the questions – lots of fun! OMG I was so cracking up on your “book the president should read” answer – I completely and UTTERLY agree – he needs to get his tushy off Twitter and learn how humans in a civilized society treat one another!

  3. Oh great answers for this tag Meghan, I especially loved your answer for what book you’d recommend to the president! XD
    I definitely wouldn’t be surprised by any of the books on your bookshelf. You read such a wide variety of books I don’t think any genre would be out of place on your shelves. I really hope you enjoy The Bone Season series when you get around to it, it’s a favourite of mine so I’ll be really interested to see what you do think of it, also that’s a shame about the Shadow and Bone trilogy, but I guess we can’t love all the books we pick up can we? ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thank you Beth! Oh haha, well I couldn’t think of any books because like I say I doubt he reads.
      Oh why thank you, I try to read as widely as I can just to broaden my horizons.
      I hope so too! I should really buy the rest of the books in the series.
      It’s true, I try to like all the books, but you just can’t!

      1. That’s all right! ๐Ÿ˜€ Yeah honestly he doesn’t strike me as the kind of person who reads either. ๐Ÿ™‚
        It’s definitely a good thing, I’d like to try and broaden my horizons a little but I know what I like when it comes to books.
        Personally I think life would be a little boring if we went into books knowing we were going to love it 100% of the time you know?

    1. I know how you feel, I just read book four which is 1000+ pages and it took me around 10 days to get through. I liked it, but a lot of it was backstory into the main character, so on one hand it moved the story because we found out a lot about him, but on the other it felt like nothing happened. Buuuuut I would say read them because I’m certainly enjoying them, I’m sure you will too! ๐Ÿ™‚

      4. Okay… so I lied… my copy is 925 buuuuut it’s significantly smaller than book four which has 1020 pages so I just assumed by size what it looked to be. Plus the pages are like bible thin… it’s really weird that the two don’t have consistent page textures.
