Review: The Female of the Species

Hello all, happy Monday! Today I’m coming at you with my review of Mindy McGinnis’ novel The Female of the Species.

The Female of the Species

The Female of the Species by: Mindy McGinnis: When Alex Craft’s sister, Anna, died three years ago and her killer got away, Alex knew she had to take care of it. Jack Fisher still feels guilty about the night Anna’s body was found and as much as he sees Alex, he wants to know her, and so does Peekay, the preacher’s daughter. When unfortunate circumstances bring them together, it becomes a night none of them will ever forget, in the worst way possible. This was a hard-hitting novel that takes on rape culture. This started off slow and the reader wasn’t sure where the plot was going or what the point was, but as the reader moved through the novel, things became more clear, although it wasn’t until the end that everything truly came together. The build-up to the end was a little torturous, but the reader wasn’t expecting that ending and wow did it pack a punch. The writing in this novel was different, like McGinnis chose her words very carefully, putting a lot of thought and care into each one. Her characters were interesting and the development was really good. The development as they became friends with each other, learning to open up with one another was a perfect way to learn about a character. McGinnis did a great job of writing female characters and writing about girl love. We read so much about girl hate, that this was refreshing to read about girls loving and supporting each other. Even though this story had a slow pace to it, and dealt with some very heavy topics, it was really well crafted and executed novel.

  1. This has been on my TBR radar for years and for some reason I still haven’t gotten around to reading it. Need to remedy that because I’m loving the idea that this does not reinforce the girl hate stereotype that I hate so much!

    1. Yes! I’d love to hear your thoughts on this book! At first I really wasn’t into it, but then as I was reading I was like girls supporting girls is what we need!
