Review: Citizen

Hi friends, happy Wednesday & happy Valentine’s Day! I hope you’re all having a lovely day! Today I’m posting my review of Claudia Rankine’s collection of essays, Citizen.

Citizen

Citizen by: Claudia Rankine: This was a moving and poetic set of short essays that really dug home the microagressions that Black Americans face on the daily. Even though this was written in 2014 it’s still poignant and valid ten years later, which is sad on many levels. This really spoke to things that are often missed in the everyday conversations and interactions. It was well written, although the reader didn’t care for how some of the essays were presented, but for the most part, these were all well-crafted in a way to strike a punch. They liked how Rankine could get her point across in just a few words and that made it hit much harder. Because the essays were so short, it didn’t take long to get through and to top it off this book is only 160 pages, so it can be read it a day, but the messages that were explored and shared stay with the reader well after they’re done reading. In the end, this was a thought provoking and illuminating read that everyone should read at least once.
