Review: The Kane Chronicles

Hi guys! Happy Wednesday, I hope you’re all having an amazing week. Yet another scheduled post for you guys! Today I’m going to be posting my reviews on the Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan.

The Red Pyramid

The Red Pyramid by: Rick Riordan: Siblings, Carter and Sadie have lived apart in two different worlds for years. After the death of their mother sent to live separately, the two have now come together when an explosion happens at the British Museum and their father disappears. Realizing that things aren’t how they appear, the two have to learn to embrace their family roots, even if that means their Egyptian God roots to save their lives and the lives of others. In true Riordan fashion, this novel was fast-paced, well told and a change from the Percy Jackson novels. Sure, it was structured in a similar way, but we’re getting to learn about a different type of mythology and a new world that feels fresh and exciting. As always, Riordan can write a story and really give it meaning. This was a great brother sister duo that was relatable and fun to read. Watching the two grow from start to finish was something special. The reader can’t help but notice how strong their bond forms over the course of the novel, and Riordan has become a master at not only creating dynamic plots and fun stories, but heartfelt characters with bonds that root deeper than words on a page. The way this novel ended was not what readers expected, yet it hooked the reader into wanting, and almost needing, to read the next book. Riordan put it out like a call to action to continue the journey as if the reader is part of the story and it’s so clever. This was definitely a great first novel into what will be an epic series.

The Throne of Fire

The Throne of Fire by: Rick Riordan: The Kane siblings have been sent to Brooklyn to train as magicians and master their skills, but before they can do that the gods have other plans. The deadliest god is now rising, which could result in the end of the world. The Kane’s, with the help of some of their friends, need to stop this before that happens. But that’s easier said than done when they must track down a sun god, search the world for a book and learn to chant spells. This novel was another action packed adventure from Riordan. What really stood out this time were the characters. The relationship between Sadie and Carter is so fun to read and dive into; from where they started to where they ended in this novel is quite the transformation. The sibling dynamic is blossoming so well and the way they care for one another really resonates with the reader. All the characters who play a major role in this book all bring something to the table and not only are the relationships with one another is so well written, but they really bring this sense of wonder and amusement to the story. The addition of all these characters really brought life and made the plot fun as these characters seemed so wacky and quirky, a tad bit peculiar and it all worked so well. The plot was fast moving and definitely a page turner. The overall story moved well, and the back and forth point of view between Sadie and Carter made it fun and enjoyable for the reader. This was a well thought out and entertaining novel and the reader can’t wait to dive into the final book.

The Serpent’s Shadow

The Serpent’s Shadow by: Rick Riordan: With time running out, and Gods disappearing or becoming weak, it’s up to Carter, Sadie and their trainees to stop Apophis and restore order to the world. But that’s easier said than done and when it comes down to it, there is only one real way to do all of this, but it may cost them their lives. This novel was a great ending to a fun and adventurous trilogy. Not only were the plots truly engaging and really well crafted, but so were the characters. It was such a journey to watch where these characters came from, to where they ended up. Riordan has this way of writing friendships really well, friendships that really capture the essence of being friends with someone. This quality writing and the added bonus of all the side characters who are hilarious and just bring the whole story to life really rounded this novel and made it very enjoyable. The ending was great, and those extra scenes where Riordan tied characters from other series in to create a cross over universe was just brilliant and, obviously, super exciting to read. This trilogy was hands down, hilarious, action-packed and full of Egyptian mythology that leaves the reader craving more.

Brooklyn House Magician’s Manual

Brooklyn House Magician’s Manual by: Rick Riordan: This short novella highlights and guides its reader through the Brooklyn House and invites them to explore more on the characters from the Kane Chronicles. This gave readers the chance to really read up on characters who may not have always played a prominent role in the series; really showcasing the secondary characters and giving them a voice. There are a lot of short stories in their points of view, which was a lot of fun to read. The fact that Riordan chose to give his readers information in the form of quizzes was an interesting and entertaining format to read. Plus, the underlying plot of Setne trying to take over the world was both hilarious and intriguing to read, leaving the reader curious where this plot was going to go, but also glad this plot was all wrapped up by the end of the novella. Overall, this was an enjoyable addition to the series, a series the reader wished didn’t have to end.
