Hello friends, happy Wednesday! I hope you’re all having a good week so far. Today I’m posting my review of Claribel A. Ortega’s novel Ghost Squad.
Read more: Review: Ghost SquadGhost Squad by: Claribel A. Ortega: Halloween is fast approaching and Lucely and her best friend Syd accidentally cast a spell that awakens spiteful spirits that are now causing trouble throughout their town. Now, with the help of Syd’s grandmother, Babette and her cat Chunk, they must reverse the curse and save the town and Lucely’s firefly spirits before it’s too late. This was such a fun, adventure of a read. This was so easy to read and get lost in; the world building was so enjoyable that it left the reader constantly wanting to know what would happen next. The paranormal suspense was really well done; it wasn’t too cheesy or too complex which left it easy to follow along with. There were many turns with spooky ghoulish twists that brought the story to life. The role of the ghosts in Lucely’s life were really cleverly incorporated and gave the story this additional layer of family and connection. The characters could have been slightly more developed to make them a little more memorable, but they were so innocent and pure and full of good intentions that the reader couldn’t help but love them. There were some secondary characters that strongly stood out, namely Babette; she was a force to be reckoned with and the reader loved any chance they got where she entered the story; her and her cat, Chunk, were some of the best parts of the story. Full of Dominican folklore, graveyards and everything spooky this novel was an entertaining ghostly read that is a must read for lovers of middle grade fiction.
I have to admit that I didn’t really love this one. 😦 I thought there were a lot of plot holes and inconsistencies, and I wanted better worldbuilding. I tried Witchlings recently and I also found it mediocre.

I hear you, it could have been better. For the most part I enjoyed it for what it was. That’s too bad that another book you tried from this author wasn’t the best either 😕
