Chain of Thorns

Chain of Thorns by: Cassandra Clare: Just when Cordelia Carstairs thought she’d lost everything; she has no idea what’s in store for her. After running off to Paris with Matthew Fairchild, does she learn that Tatiana Blackthorn has escaped and is on the loose, and a demon is threatening London. Now Cordelia has to find her way back home so she can help in any way she can to fight off the evil before it claims the city and the lives of everyone she loves. While in the process, she must face her own personal demons to resolve the issues that plague her and her friends. Filled with drama and action this last novel in the Shadowhunter universe was as jam packed as ever. This felt like three novels in one with the sheer size of it and the amount that happens. From start to finish, there was always something happening, which made the plot enjoyable. There were quite a few twists and turns that the reader didn’t see coming, some were better than others, and some progressed the plot more than others, too. Sometimes, the reader found that some scenes would happen and it felt like they didn’t do anything for the plot or the characters, it just felt like added words. The reader felt that maybe a little more editing could have been done on this to cut out the parts that made this drag a bit. Aside from that though, the reader did enjoy being back in this world for one last time. The writing was good, and the stories of all the characters were entertaining and had us wanting to know how their story would end. The reader also felt like there were so many characters to keep track of that, in the beginning it was a lot to take in, but by the hundredth page or so, it got easier. For the most part, each of the characters got a good ending, some got what felt like an unjust ending. The reader gets that not everything can be a happy ending, but it just felt like some characters could have had a better ending. The ups and downs that they all went through was a rollercoaster to read because we never knew what would happen. The reader liked that situations forced characters to be real, honest and upfront about their thoughts and feelings because that sparked really good communication, which meant a lot less miscommunication and misdirects. In the end though, this was a massive beast of a book to get through that, for the most part, was engaging, written well, with characters we’ve come to love throughout the years.
