Hi friends and happy Wednesday! I hope you’re all having a good week so far. Today I’m going to be posting my review of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s novel Gods of Jade and Shadow.

Gods of Jade and Shadow by: Silvia Moreno-Garcia: Set in the 1920s, Mexico, The Jazz Age is alive and well, full of dances and fast music, but for Casiopea Tun she’s stuck in her small town doing the same tasks day in and day out. One-day curiosity has her opening a wooden box, accidently freeing an imprisoned god; this begins her adventure across the country where she encounters ghosts, shape-shifters, magic and more. This was such a fun and fast-paced novel full of magic and mythology. The plot was such an adventure that the reader couldn’t help but fall down the rabbit hole of this story and be sucked in by the stories and the characters. The writing was also so lush and beautiful that it just mesmerized the reader. There was something so heartwarming and comforting about this story. The time period really brought stories to life and all the places that Casiopea found herself in were enchanting and adventurous. The characters were a lot of fun to read. The sarcasm that rolled off some of them was amazing and the dynamics were just so well done. The reader couldn’t get enough of some of the dialogue. The growth that both Casiopea and Martín go through over the course of this novel was a journey to read about and the reader thoroughly enjoyed it. Overall, this was such a heartening coming of age story that has so much packed into such a short book, the reader can’t help but want more.
