Happy Wednesday friends! Today I’m going to be posting my review of Ann Redisch Stampler’s novel How to Disappear.

How to Disappear by: Ann Redisch Stampler: Jack’s brother is in jail, but he’s always recruited Jack to do his dirty work. His mission this time is to track down and kill a girl named Nicolette who is said to have murderer someone, but did she? Nicolette is on the run pretending to be a girl named Cat when Jack finds her. The two get along for a while, that is, until Jack calls her by her real name, and things get complicated. Realizing that he doesn’t want to be like his criminal family, Jack doesn’t want to hurt her, but old habits die hard. Told in the perspective of both Jack and Nicolette, this novel weaves the two stories that somehow become one. This novel takes time to really understand what is happening, and the reader is on this journey that left them really unsure where the story was going and how it would end. The fact that the plot led the reader through all these twists and turns was interesting; the reader was definitely engaged because they never knew what to expect. This left the plot very fast-paced and a definite page turner. The fact that the author felt the need to create a love story between these two characters felt forced and out of sorts with the novel. It felt like this extra layer was added that didn’t need to be added. Some of it just confused the reader, as they couldn’t figure out what the character’s motivations were to act the way they did. For the majority of the novel the reader didn’t know if the characters were lying or what their real motives were. Stampler’s characters were definitely morally grey, but getting to know them was an interesting experience. For the most part, this novel was really easy to get into, even if some of the plots weren’t the best, it was a fast-paced, always kept you guessing kind of novel that may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but definitely an intriguing read.
