Review: The Love That Split the World

Hi guys! Happy Monday. Today is a holiday here in Ontario so I’m chilling with a drink in my hand šŸ¹. Today I’m going to be reviewing Emily Henry’s novelĀ The Love that Split the World.

The Love that Split the World

The Love that Split the World by: Emily Henry: Itā€™s Natalieā€™s last summer before she heads off to school, leaving her small Kentucky town behind. But before she can do that, this apparition that she calls Grandmother tells her she has three months to save him. Unsure of what that means, let alone unsure about the world that seems to be fading around her, she sets herself on this journey to complete what it is Grandmother has set out for her. What a whirlwind of a novel. It felt so existential, dealing with time and the existence of all the characters. Henry had this big plot and it felt so well researched, sometimes maybe a little too researched in the words she used felt very technical, but it made the plot feel very thought out. As the reader got to the end of the novel it felt like we were supposed to be confused for most of it because the main character was confused about her own existence. That made reading this kinda hard because it left the reader feeling disjointed a lot of the time. To make up for the confusion though, Henryā€™s characters were beautiful; they were rounded and dynamic, but they also felt very loved and they exuded love. This was definitely a stand-out novel that had a lot of potential, if only the plot was less disoriented.

  1. Great review for this book Meghan, though Iā€™m sorry you found it a little confusing in places. I feel like that is a standard for magical realism books sometimes. Still at least you were able to enjoy the characters and the writing. Itā€™s a beautiful story isnā€™t it?
