Let’s Talk About… Podcasts Part II

Hello friends, happy Tuesday! I hope you’re all doing well. Today I thought I’d go back to a post that I had published back in 2016, talking about the podcasts I listen to! Let’s get listening shall we? 🙂

Back in 2016, I went through the 19 podcasts I was listening to. You can read that post, here! Today I’m going to be doing an update on that post. Some I still currently listen to, which I’ll start with, and then move into the new ones I’ve found since then, all while being in alphabetical order.

Ear Biscuits

This podcast has taken on a different direction since it first started. What used to be Rhett and Link from Good Mythical Morning interviewing other famous YouTubers has turned into their own musings on life and the things that happen to each other. Their opening tag is, ‘a podcast where two life-long friends talk about life for a really long time’… that, pretty much sums up the show now. I adore it. I don’t watch any of their YouTube videos or anything else, but I love diving into this podcast to hear what they’re up to, because they usually have really interesting and unique stories to tell (mostly Link 😂) but it’s always such a good time. I highly recommend for a good laugh.

Serial

I’m keeping this here in my “currently listening” only because every once in a while a new case, that’s usually reported by someone other than Sarah Koenig, drops into the feed and I end up listening to it because I find they’re interesting. The last one was about a bunch of kids getting arrested, which was interesting, but not my favourite. I liked the one before it about the nurse stealing fentanyl from women who were receiving IVF treatment, it was wild. I never know what I’ll get, so that’s why I listen.

Stuff You Should Know

I am still going strong with SYSK. Back in 2016, I was 2 years in and still trying to catch up on their immersive catalog. They have over 1000 episodes at this point, but I can proudly say that I’m caught up on this. Hosted by Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant, the two take on any topic ever known to man and try to educate the public on it. After years of podcasting together, the witty banter and the inside jokes are hilarious, but they still handle all topics with care, which I really enjoy. The title of the podcast says it all!

You Must Remember This

This podcast is still going strong. Every season is a different story from a different decade and it’s always so interesting. She just finished up talking about the 90s in erotic 90s and that was a pretty juicy season. Hosted by Karina Longworth, she dives into Hollywood’s untold stories and exposes them. Her attention to history and research is astounding. Her retellings on what happened are so full of life and entertaining. This podcast is for anyone who loves a little history, and a little Hollywood gossip… even if it may be old gossip.

Now to the new podcasts!

Drama Queens

This is probably one of my new favourite podcasts because my favourite show, ever, is One Tree Hill. So when actors Hilarie Burton, Sophia Bush and Bethany Joy Lenz announced they were creating a rewatch podcast about the show they starred in for 9 years, I was ALL for it. These three are rewatching the show and it’s been so much fun. They recap episodes (they are currently in the middle of season 6), sometimes they do more in-depth conversations and play-by-plays, sometimes they are all over the place and talk less about the episode; they have guests come on the show, a lot of cast members and crew. It’s just a lot of fun to hear about the inside stories from a show I love a lot.

The Losers’ Club: A Stephen King Podcast

This is a new-to-me podcast, as they’ve been around since 2017 and I only listen to it sporadically, but I really enjoy the in-depth analysis that these guys go into with Stephen King. This podcast is hosted by an assortment of people and you usually never get the same group of people talking about the book, but after a few episodes you kinda get a sense of who’s who. They are doing the same thing that I’m doing… but at a faster pace. They’re reading (and watching) all of King’s books (and adaptions) in chronological order. Every time I finish a book, I’ll go to these guys to hear what their thoughts were. I like how knowledgeable they are in the world of King; not only about the text itself that they are analyzing, but on King himself, they seem to have background knowledge on things that I would never have known, they are like superfans of King and it’s awesome! I also like that they’ve had guests on the podcast who were actors or directors to the adaptions – I also think at this point, King himself has been on, but I’m so far away from listening to all of those. I’m just happy I have a lot of great content to look forward to. They do go on tangents quite frequently, so some of the episodes can run almost 3+ hours long, so if you don’t mind that and you love King, it’s a great podcast.

Pod Meets World

Another rewatch podcast on my list (they are currently in the middle of season 4) and one I just started listening to, sorta (it’s been about half a year). Again, when I heard the commercial that actors Rider Strong, Danielle Fishel and Will Friedle were coming together to rewatch Boy Meets World, the show they starred in for 7 years, I was really curious. I think most of it stemmed from the fact that I’ve been itching to rewatch BMW for some time and this really gave me an excuse to dive it. I find these three hilarious, and I think that makes me appreciate the podcast and the TV show more. I was too young to really embrace BMW when it first aired… I think I watched most of it in reruns and I have to say there are SO many episodes I don’t even remember. This podcast does such a thorough walk through of the episode, honestly I think Danielle goes line-by-line through it, they give their thoughts, they give backstory information and I enjoy listening to it all. I also really enjoy that they have guests from BMW on to talk about their experiences and the last thing I really like, is how therapeutic it is for them and how open they are about mental health, and therapy, it’s truly a beautiful podcast.

I thought I’d also add two podcasts that I started listening to after I wrote my 2016 post, but have since ended.

Inside Voices

To be fair, I’m not 100% this has completely ended, but there hasn’t been a new episode in 4 years, so to me it’s over. Kevin T. Porter (one of the hosts of Gilmore Guys) created a new podcast (well he created a few, this was just one that I actually enjoyed) where he invites other podcasters on to talk about their voices. What do they think of their own voice, what have others said about their voice. It was a really interesting and introspective podcast that I enjoyed. I have to say, Kevin is really good at asking questions and moderating a conversation.

Punch Up the Jam

Now I know for a fact this one ended because they announced it. This podcast went through a number of host changes in the last few years of its run, but the original hosts, Demi Adejuyigbe (the other host of Gilmore Guys) and Mel Bredouw, were my favourite; they were hilarious and had me laughing for hours. Then it was just Mel and a guest for a while before the last iteration was brothers Andrew and Evan Gregory. In this podcast, they would take a song… and punch it up, essentially. But before they would go and make up their own ‘punched up’ version, they would talk about the song, the history, musical components, and anything else they wanted to add, facts about the song. Then they’d go line-by-line through the song dissecting the lyrics and the music. This used to be one of my favourite podcasts and the first couple of years I really think are worth the listen (or re-listen).

Lastly, I want to add one last podcast… one I haven’t started yet… but one that I’m very interesting in listening to… and that’s:

Dear Felicity

All I know about this podcast is that it’s starring the cast and crew of the show Felicity and they’re going through the show… not so much as a rewatch podcast, but to talk about episodes and themes and to explain why this show still means so much to people and why it still resonates with people to this day. I look forward to diving into this one!

  1. I’ve listened to a couple Punch Up the Jam episodes and they were a lot of fun! I don’t listen to too many podcasts but I do enjoy Normal Gossip and the New Girl rewatch show, and I listen to one about book publishing in the 1800s that’s produced by a research team

    1. Ah man, the first few years of Punch Up the Jam were so good! I laughed on my commutes to work a lot of times!
The New Girl rewatch show sounds interesting as I just started rewatching that show myself. The book publishing one also sounds pretty interesting, too!
