Review: My Plain Jane

Hello everyone, happy Monday! Today I’m going to be posting my review of Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows’ novel My Plain Jane.

You can read my review of My Lady Jane (The Lady Jaines #1) here.

My Plain Jane

My Plain Jane by: Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton & Jodi Meadows: A Jane Eyre retelling with a twist. Jane is a poor girl who is looking for change in her new position as a governess at Thornfield Hall, and all her friend, Charlotte, wants to do is write about her life and get her into situations that lead to meeting Alexander, a ghost hunter. This novel started off really well, the premise sounded fun and interesting, but as it started to get into the thick of the story, so much was going on that the reader found it hard to keep up. The writing was alright, it was nothing earth shattering, and having all these plots going in different directions was hard to follow and left the reader uninterested in the story. The three main characters in this novel just didn’t have the same quirkiness, or were as memorable as the characters in the first. They had so much promise because of their abilities, but it just felt like it got muddled down and lost within all the different stories. What was done well was the representation of friendship. It was heartwarming and beautiful to read, the authors did a great job of creating a strong bond between each of the characters. Overall, this second novel wasn’t as good as the first and just left the reader disappointed.

  1. Sorry this one wasn’t so great Meghan. I’ve been humming and hawing over picking up this series for what feels like forever now. I have a feeling it would frustrate me lol!

    1. Yeah, this wasn’t my cup of tea, the first book was so much better! Maybe it’s because I’ve never read Jane Eyre that I just didn’t get it or maybe that would have made it worse, I will never know haha!
Yeah, I don’t know how much I’d recommend it!
