Redemptor

Redemptor by: Jordan Ifueko: Now that Tarisai has come into her full Raybearer powers, she makes the decision to descend to the Underworld, which is a sacrifice to end all future cruelties. No one who goes, ever returns but Tarisai is determined to survive. Either she will die for justice or live for it. With the help of her inner circle, she makes the journey hoping for a better tomorrow for her people. This novel really expanded the world we got to know in the first book and really gave the reader a fascinating place to be. The world building in this one was so well done, we got to explore and understand everything better. The reader could see how Ifueko pulled on modern day issues and explored them in her world. The plot was fast-paced and really had the reader wondering what was going to happen. This was truly Tarisai’s mission and in order to follow it we really had to understand her as a character and Ifueko did an amazing job of that. We got to see her grow and explore herself, figure herself out. The reader was so annoyed with her in the beginning because she felt she needed to save everyone and no one understood the goal she had; it didn’t help she had a voice in her head completely ruining her and making her feel like she was alone. Watching her break free from that voice was breathtaking to read because every time the reader thought she would get sucked back in, and there were times that she would succumb to it, but seeing her strength as she made her decisions was really powerful. The reader was really in awe of how far she came and how far she was willing to take herself. The secondary characters were just as important because they really helped Tarisai on this fight she had to take; some of them were a little less developed than others, but it was good to see different forms of representation in this, making it feel really inclusive. The reader had doubts about this book because the first left them feeling really lackluster about the story and the characters but Ifueko really pulled through and gave a solid comeback for her world and definitely for her characters. In the end, this was such a fantastic journey to go on and really closed out this duology really well.
