Review: The Girls

Hello, and happy Monday friends! I can’t believe we’re nearing the end of April, my gosh this month went by so fast! Today, I’m going to be posting my review of Emma Cline’s novel The Girls.

The Girls

The Girls by: Emma Cline: When sixteen-year-old Evie gets caught up with a group of girls she sees at the park, mesmerized by their freedom, she has no idea the changes her life is about to go down, filled with cults and violence. Set in the late 1960s, Evie must find herself amongst all that begins to consume her. This was definitely an interesting novel and a good coming of age story. The way the plot moves from present to past, taking place mostly in the past, it really worked because the reader got to learn so much more about the main character as she reflected on her own life. The plot was engrossing and kept the reader engaged, although there were definitely moments when the reader questions what they’re reading. For the most part this was a well told story, just not everyone’s cup of tea; dealing with cults and violence this novel goes to the extremes a bit. The characters are well written and Cline does a good job of capturing a teenage girl and really getting into her mindset because that was relatable, what happened to her may not be, but definitely how she felt about things and the world. This novel had a nice round ending that the reader appreciated. This novel was different, and a little eccentric, which made for an intriguing reading experience.

  1. Great review!

I actually just finished this book just a few days ago, and I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it! I definitely agree with you in that it might not be everyone’s taste because of how violent and explicit it is; while I found the behind-the-scenes information of the cult intriguing and disturbing at the same time, I unfortunately didn’t enjoy the writing style as much as I would’ve hoped. But you make some great points about Cline’s ability to capture a teenage girl.

    Lovely post!

    1. Thank you! 🙂

I’m glad you enjoyed my review, I agree with you, her writing wasn’t my favourite, but it wasn’t the worst so I was able to get through the novel. Definitely getting inside the cult was interesting, and I think that was my favourite part was how well she was able to get into the mind of teenage girl, that was super relatable!
