Review: Outrun the Moon

Hello, and happy Monday! Today I’m going to be posting my review of Stacey Lee’s novel Outrun the Moon.

Outrun the Moon

Outrun the Moon by: Stacey Lee: Mercy Wong is headstrong and determined to get into a prestigious school for girls to hopefully start to end some of the poverty in San Francisco’s Chinatown. She realizes that getting in was the easy part, staying in would be the hard part. But when an earthquake rattles up and destroys their home, Mercy can’t just sit by and wait for her parents to come for her, she must take action and help where she can. This was quite a novel. The writing was really gorgeous and poetic for something so tragic. It flowed and really helped the reader fall into the story. The overall story was so well told and it was fast-paced with lots of ups and downs that took the reader on quite the ride. Lee’s characters are probably what made this novel though; they were fresh and developed with flaws that made them feel human. Mercy as a character was really, really well done. She was a flushed out character who was enjoyable to read and made the reader want to be just like her because she’s so fearless, tough and strong willed, but she’s also compassionate and so full of love. This novel was not only full of sadness but full of hope and love too. This was definitely a beautiful put together novel that deserves to be read.
