Review: Scarlett Epstein Hates it Here

Hi guys! Happy Wednesday! Today I’m going to be posting my review of Anna Breslaw’s novel Scarlett Epstein Hates it Here.

Scarlett Epstein Hates it Here

Scarlett Epstein Hates It Here by: Anna Breslaw: When Scarlett’s favourite TV show gets canceled she takes pen to paper, or fingers to keys, and starts her own fan fiction on the message boards. Only her fan fiction isn’t about the stars of the show, but the very real people in her life. When they find out about it, things take drastic turns. This novel took some time to get into. Not only was the plot kinda rough around the edges, but Breslaw’s characters were too. It really took time to like and understand Scarlett. Once the reader starts to get her they realize that she’s quite a complex and rather smart girl. The plot started slow, but really picked up about halfway through and it became this fast-paced, what is going to happen story. The amount of pop-culture references that were used was incredible; at times it really did feel like overkill, but some of them were very spot on. This was definitely a teen novel with mixed adult and teen themes; it was engaging and unexpectedly darker than it looks.

  1. Great review for this book, and I’m glad you enjoyed it as well. It seems like it was worth sticking through the slow beginning, also the cover looks like a typical YA contemporary so I’m very intrigued by what you said about this book being darker than it looks. 🙂

    1. Thank you Beth! 🙂 It’s been a theme for me with books recently, waiting for them to become better… the book I’m currently didn’t get better for me so I’m sad I didn’t DNF it… I’ve got less than 100 pages so I’m going to power through.

Yes, it was definitely darker, I thought it was going to be a sweet contemporary… I was wrong!

      1. That’s all right, and yeah I used to have the same attitude with books. I wouldn’t DNF them because they could get better but more often than not they didn’t. I’m glad that wasn’t the case with this one but sucks it seems to be the case with the one you’re currently reading. 🙂
