Review: Percy Jackson Companion Novels

Hi everyone! Happy Monday- I hope everyone is having a good one! Today I’m going to be reviewing the companion novels to Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series.

The Demigod Files

The Demigod Files by: Rick Riordan: This novella takes readers through some bonus content in Percy Jackson’s world. These few stories give an inside to the characters the reader has come to love. The little interviews that they have with the main characters is not only fun and entertaining to read, but we learn just a little bit more. This novella is definitely worth the read as it’s action-packed and of course filled with all the characters we know. The writing was what the reader expects to get from Riordan, sarcastic mixed with exciting and intense plots. Even though they weren’t long stories Riordan knows how to create an intense plot in a short amount of time. Whether you read this book while reading the series, or afterwards, it’s still a nice addition for fans.

Percy Jackson’s Greek Heroes

Percy Jackson’s Greek Heroes by: Rick Riordan: Percy Jackson is back at it again, in this story he’s here to discuss stories from ancient Greece by giving the reader stories from the gods Hercules, Perseus, Theseus, and a bunch more. This novel goes into the introduction stories to a lot of the Greek God heroes and how they got to be where they are today. The way Percy narrates each story is hilarious and fun; his references are all over the place, some may go over a middle grade reader’s head, which makes the reader wonder who these references are for, and who Riordan thinks is reading these books; this is a clear sign that his books have become universal to all ages. The plots were extremely addicting to read, the reader couldn’t get enough; it didn’t help that the writing was passionate about the gods and that made it all the more enjoyable. This was definitely an added bonus to the Percy Jackson series, with bonus Percy commentary.

Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods

Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods by: Rick Riordan: In this riveting tale of Greek Gods Percy Jackson takes the reader on a splendid journey through the main Gods origins stories. This was another fun dive into the Greek Gods. The way Riordan really gets into character with Percy is fun, full of energy and with classic wit. The stories obviously are based on history yet take a bit of spin as Riordan uses them to fit his characters and stories, which is brilliant. These ancient Gods also get a spin on the modern day world as ‘Percy’ uses this time period to reference when the Gods were born; it’s a fun and hilarious way to lean about Greek history. The illustrations that go alongside this book are very detailed and very well done. The only thing that is too bad is the fact that there aren’t more within the pages. There is about one or two illustrations per chapter and the book is so big that more could have been used. That aside, this was a lovely companion to the Percy Jackson series.

Demigods & Magicians

Demigods & Magicians by: Rick Riordan: A companion novella to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series comes a tale where Percy and Annabeth meet the Kane siblings Carter and Sadie. The four first meet in unexpected places and have to use and combine their knowledge of what they each know to stop this ancient enemy who is using both Greek and the Egyptian powers for evil. This novella was exciting and full of non-stop action. The plot kept getting better and better as the story went on, the reader didn’t want to put the book down. This has got to be some of Riordan’s most comedic work yet; with every page turn his characters were spitting out these witty remarks, which really makes this novel fly by. This was definitely worth the read as it gives the reader an inside as to how these characters know one another, that you probably won’t get in any other one of Riordan’s novels, plus the story was pretty captivating.

Camp Half-Blood Confidential

Camp Half-Blood Confidential by: Rick Riordan: This is the ultimate companion book to the whole Percy Jackson universe. This book gives readers an inside look at Camp Half-Blood, and what to expect when you get there. This treats the reader as if they are a demigod and gives them the knowhow on surviving. This was compelling and completely interactive to the whole series. From page one Riordan is off to his old trick of wits leaving the reader wanting more. Not only is his writing flawless, he has become an expert on his characters and knows how to write them perfectly. Aside from his great already existing characters, this book really makes the reader a character, and it’s all so well done. Filled with fun scenes, places to see, and origin stories, this was worth the read.

  1. Great reviews for these books Meghan. 🙂 I really love the Percy Jackson series (at least the books I’ve read so far) but I haven’t read any of these. I’m not really as interested in them as I am the main books and the main stories, but based on your reviews they seem amazing so I may have to change my mind on picking them up one day.
    Again great reviews. 😀 ❤

  2. The only book out of these that I have read is Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods and I completely ADORED that book! 😀 I loved learning about Greek Goods through Percy. His thoughts are always a lot of fun to read. Plus the illustrations are gorgeous as well! ❤ I need to get my hands on Percy Jackson’s Greek Heroes. Amazing reviews! 🙂

    1. Haha, it does, but it’s a good commitment! I haven’t read all the series yet no. I’ve only read Percy Jackson and the companion novels. I’m slowly making my way through the rest! I hope you start your journey soon! 🙂

  4. Kodus to you Meghan! When I first started reading Rick Riordan’s mythology universe I can’t have enough of it. Lost sleep many times reading them (especially the heroes of Olympus series). Feels good to meet a fellow ‘demigod’ XD. 100% thumbs up! 🙂
