PRINCE2 & PMP Certifications: Head-to-head

When it comes to the International Project management certification programs, PMP and PRINCE 2 are the most respected and sought-after ones. Though both these programs aim towards managing projects with higher efficiency, there are some prominent points of difference between the two.  Paragraphs underneath shall explore those points of difference.

The subject matter

PMP is concerned with knowledge of project management, while, PRINCE2 deals with the methodologies for running the projects with enhanced efficiency. As such, it will be right to say that the PMP is the theoretical approach while, PRINCE 2 is the applied part. PMP is concerned with the probable ways to bring more efficiency while, PRICE 2 deals with the type of the improvements, the probable time to reach the standards as well as the key players to bring the improvements.

Countries that follows these certification standards

PMO is more popular in the United States and Canada, as well as in the Australian Continent and the Middle-East Nations. On the other hand, the United States and other Europen nations hold priority for the Prince2 certification program.

What are the differences in terms of the examination format?

For both these certifications, the accrediting bodies will serve study materials to the candidates, undergoing the programs. As for PMP, candidates will require answering 200 questions, while for the PRINCE2 Certification, you will require answering 75 and 80 questions, for the foundation and Practitioner level examinations. The questions for PMP and PRINCE2 Foundation level certification are in multiple choice format, while for the practitioner level examination for the PRINCE2, the questions are in Objective testing type. Though, the questions for the PMP certification and PRINCE2 foundation are of abstract types, for that on the practitioner level of the PRINCE2 program, the questions are based on specific scenarios.

Differences in terms of the eligibility criteria

PMP eligibility

  • 3 years of experience in domain of project management. Candidates without a 4-year degree, need to hold minimum work experience of 5 years.
  • 4500 Hours of experience in Directing and leading projects. If you don’t have a 4-year degree, you should hold 7500 hours of experience in similar lines.
  • Formal education in project management for a minimum span of 35 hours.

PRINCE 2 Eligibility

For the foundation level certification, you might be required to undergo formal training. You should have qualified the Foundation level to opt for the Practitioner level certification.

SKILLOGIC™ is providing ‘Online training for PRINCE2’ in INDIA. And SKILLOGIC™ is leading training institute for PRINCE2 related certification courses.

Needs for certificate renewal

PMP certificate holders are expected to renew their certifications in every 3 years though PDUs. The foundation level certification of PRINCE2 never expires and for the Practitioner level, you would require renewing the certificate in intervals of 3 to 5 years, taking apparently shorter examinations.

You need to keep in mind that the purposes of these certifications is not to contradict each other. Rather, these certifications complement each other and hence, you can even think of attaining both these certificates. You should opt for one among these two, considering its suitability with your professional goals and objectives.

Along with PRINCE2, SKILLOGIC™ also provides ‘Online training for PMP’ in INDIA. And SKILLOGIC™ having classroom training centers in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.
